Deporte olímpico de invierno que junto al bobsleigh y al skeleton representan distintas modalidades de descenso en trineo. Luge significa trineo ligero. Aunque las carreras de trineos son muy antiguas y de ellas se encuentran crónicas en documentos de hace varios siglos en países como Noruega, el luge como deporte organizado y sometido a reglas aparece a finales del siglo XIX. Se considera que como punto de arranque una competición que tuvo lugar en Davos (Suiza) en 1883, donde se reunieron participantes de siete países.

Carrera en la cual se utiliza un pequeño trineo en que el competidor va acostado de espaldas, con los pies hacia adelante.

El trineo, llamado luge, se maneja con los pies y con movimientos sutiles de los hombros. Sus orígenes se remontan al s. XV. En Austria es uno de los deportes tradicionales de invierno, y también se practica en otros países. La pista es similar a la del bobsleigh; no es raro alcanzar velocidades de más de 145 km/h (90 mi/h). En 1964 se convirtió en deporte oficial de los Juegos Olímpicos de Invierno.
